A few things I have learned about running a small-business:
Pay your bills in full each month.
Use credit cards only when you have to.
Don't hire family members.
Simplify your standard of living.
Work hard, than work even harder.
Market your business.
You will succeed.
Pay yourself first.
Don't take unsolicited advice from people who are not where you want to be.
Hang out with people who are where you want to be.
Remember where you came from.
When you do make it, give back.
Happy Marketing Week!

Re-Post (Your Core Customer)
I wrote this post on May 04, 2008. A friend of mine read it today, she thought it even more relevant than last year, now that we are in a full-blown recession. First off, she has never read my blog before, and second, I still can't believe she read a post from last year. She was doing some serious reading to go from 2009 to 2008. Back to my point. I normally I don't follow her advice, she's full of herself I almost always hear "told you so" from her when I do. This time I happen to agree with her. Don't tell her I said that though. Enjoy the re-post. Happy Marketing Week!
Your Core Customer
Your core customers? Do you know who they are? The economy is slowing down to a recession, now more than ever is the time to find out who your core customer is. Your core customer is the loyal customer that purchases what you sell. Every business has a group of customers that likes it’s products or services enough to make a purchase. Do you know why they like you? How often have you taken time to ask?
Have you taken the time to find out who this group is. There is a reason why a business should know who their core customers are. Let me tell you that reason, and yes it has to do with marketing. The reason is this. Knowing your core customer is how you can effectively market your product or service. Yes this is how you can stop wasting your hard earned marketing dollars. If you have no clue who you are marketing to, than you are throwing money in the wind.
Research is required to discover who your core customer is. This can be done several different ways. If you have a large marketing budget you could hire a focus group. If you have a small marketing budget you can do it the bootstrapper way. Either way you choose, finding out is the most important part of retaining your core customer.

Re-Post
This was posted sometime last year. I found it fitting to re-post it again due to the failing economy. Hope you enjoy reading it yet again. Happy Marketing Week!
Feeling Good
I want to talk about feeling good. The good feeling one gets when walking into a business and they enjoy seeing you, and not because they know you are about to make a purchase. I mean they are really happy to see you and do business with you. How often do you get that feeling? Do this for me. The very next time you enter a business, observe how they treat you. If for any reason at any moment you are not feeling good about buying from them, leave, that's right, just leave and never come back.
They will wonder why you are leaving. If you would like to tell them why, just say, "I don't feel good about giving my hard-earned money to your business". Doing this one simple act will encourage businesses to change their customer service and marketing tactics. It will be all about the customer not the business. Don't forget you have to also make sure you and your employees are giving the good feeling at your business.
